1937 Chateau Haut-Brion – half bottle
1937 Chateau Haut-Brion – half bottle

Great surprise 80th Birthday present – imagine drinking a wine from the year you were born, 80 years ago!
To everyone’s surprise, the 1937 Chateau Haut-Brion out-performed the 1947, and the soft, fully mature 1962. 1937 has a justifiable reputation for being a hard vintage, but one could see through the austere, still tannin-dominated 1937 Haut-Brion to admire the healthy, dark, dense color with only some amber at the edge. Minerals, tobacco, cedar, and coffee aromas were followed by a muscular, medium-bodied wine with plenty of power and fruit. But the vintage’s tell-tale hard tannin was still present. This particular magnum of 1937 Haut-Brion would have lasted another 20-30+ years. I suspect many 1975s are the modern day clones of the 1937 vintage. Robert Parker 89 Points, Drinking 1996 – 2026.

1985 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia – Magnum
1985 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia – Magnum

I tasted this 1985 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia in a blind tasting – I have had it frequently, and have never failed to give it a perfect rating. At the same time, I have often mis-identified it in blind tastings as the 1986 Mouton-Rothschild. In this tasting, the 1985 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia was phenomenal. The colour remains an opaque purple. The bouquet is beginning to develop secondary aromas of cedar and truffles to go along with its intense cassis, black-raspberry, blackberry, tarry, toasty personality. Exceptionally dense, concentrated, and full-bodied, this wine possesses layers of concentrated fruit that are beautifully balanced by the wine’s sweet tannin and well-integrated acidity. The finish lasts for nearly a minute. A monumental Cabernet Sauvignon, it is one of the greatest wines made this century. Tasting after tasting continues to confirm this wine’s surreal level of quality…My best guess for when it will reach full maturity is between 2015-2035. What a wine! Robert Parker 100 Points, Drinking 2005 – 2035.

2005 Guigal La Landonne
2005 Guigal La Landonne

Utter perfection, the 2005 Guigal La Landonne exhibits a similar scorched earth/burning ember and bacon fat-scented nose as well as copious quantities of black fruits, truffles, and forest floor. Incredibly dense and masculine with unreal levels of concentration, and beautifully integrated tannin, acidity, and oak, this remarkable 2005 may turn out to be the longest-lived La Landonne since the debut vintage of 1978 (which is still going strong). Cellar this cuvee for 5-6 years, and consume it over the following 35+ years. Robert Parker 100 Points, Drinking 2014 – 2049.

2005 Guigal La Mouline
2005 Guigal La Mouline

Similar to the powerful 1988, the inky/purple-colored, dense 2005 Guigal La Mouline offers a stunning perfume of espresso roast, licorice, pepper, blackberries, and black cherries intermixed with hints of chocolate and spring flowers. Powerful, super-concentrated, and ruggedly-constructed with a boatload of tannin, this is a wine to forget for 4-5 years, and drink over the following 25-30. It is the densest, most tannic vintage of La Mouline since 1988. Robert Parker 100 Points, Drinking 2013 – 2043.

2005 Guigal La Turque

Once again the 2005 Guigal La Turque is a mesmerizing wine. Its extraordinary perfume of camphor, black truffles, bacon fat, spring flowers, blackberries, and cherries is followed by a dense, full-bodied, pure, multilayered wine of superb balance and impeccable harmony. This profound, amazing 2005 should be forgotten for 4-5 years, and drunk over the next three decades. Robert Parker 100 Points, Drinking 2013 – 2043.

2007 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Aux Cras
2007 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Aux Cras

The 2007 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Aux Cras (Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru) was opened 2 hours prior to tasting. It took 2 hours to evolve and once settled, showed a mix of sour cherries, spices, and slight potpouri. In the mouth, the fruit is ripe and balanced, offering very good definition and lively acid structure. Very pure from the entry with sweet cherry fruits and spices that culminate into sappy mid palate that offers great depth and finely structured tannins – like a Vosne Romanee. The finish is medium with ongoing minerality. Elagant and beautiful, still primary. Allen Meadows 95 Points, Drinking 2014 – 2022.

2008 Chateau Lafite-Rothschild
2008 Chateau Lafite-Rothschild

The 2008 Chateau Lafite-Rothschild is a candidate for the wine of the vintage. Representing 40% of the production, this blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc offers aromas of high quality unsmoked cigar tobacco, lead pencil shavings, creme de cassis, earth, cedar and asphalt. Full, rich and stunningly concentrated, I doubt it is inferior to the 2010, just more classic as well as slightly more forward and a degree weaker in alcoholic potency (12.5% versus 13.5%). The 2008 should be relatively drinkable in 6-10 years as it is already showing remarkable complexity and breed, and will last for 30-35 years…at the minimum. Robert Parker 100 Points, Drinking 2025 – 2045.

2008 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon
2008 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley is made up of 88% Champoux Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Quilceda Creek is a partner in the vineyard), 10% Red Mountain Cabernet, and 2% Merlot from the Palengat Vineyard. As good as the Palengat cuvee is, the flagship Cabernet Sauvignon takes it to another level. A slightly brooding bouquet displays aromas of sandalwood, exotic spices, incense, violets, and wild berry notes. On the palate it has extra layers of fruit, exceptional complexity, impeccable balance, and a 60-second finish. Robert Parker 99 Points, Drinking 2012 – 2018.

2008 Sine Qua Non The Pontiff Rose
2008 Sine Qua Non The Pontiff Rose

The 2008 Sine Qua Non The Pontiff Rose is a unique blend of 47% Grenache, 31% Syrah, 22% Roussanne. It’s a big wine for rosé, with a sweet and smoky balanced I’ve never come across before. The colour points to a burgundy but that is as close as it comes. Comes across as a viscous, full-bodied wine. Lots of fruit concentration that includes watermelon and mild strawberry. While it has acidity, it is still soft and mellow with a caramel component to it. I’m guessing some of this wine underwent a little malo-lactic fermentation. Changes across the palate from beginning to end. Very interesting and nice wine. Definitely worth a try. It’s not what you think of when drinking a rosé, but is good for its own style. Drinks more like a chardonnay. Not Rated (it’s to rare), Drinking 2010 – 2018.

2009 Chateau Pape Clement
2009 Chateau Pape Clement

The 2009 Chateau Pape Clement is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2009 Chateau Pape Clement is not as dense or provocative as the 2005, but it is a worthy competitor. Tighter and more muscular than the 2005, the 2009 reveals an opaque purple color along with notes of graphite, blueberries, and blackberries, stunning richness, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and tremendous length and intensity. Some patience will be required, and I do not believe this effort will achieve the near perfection of the 2005, but it is another winner in this extraordinary vintage. Yields were 43 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine finished around 13.5% alcohol. The Chateau has turned out another profound wine under the administration of proprietor Bernard Magrez. Robert Parker 97+ Points, Drinking 2017 – 2042.

2010 Casanova di Neri Tenuta Nuova Brunello di Montalcino
2010 Casanova di Neri Tenuta Nuova Brunello di Montalcino

The 2010 Casanova de Neri Tenuta Nuova Brunello di Montalcino is a protagonist of the vintage. The fruit is deep and dark with rich levels of extract, intensity and flavor. It goes far beyond your standard cherry and blackberry to include plum cake, spice bread and bacon-wrapped prune. Nothing is obvious or monochromatic about this wine. Everything is nuanced and ethereal. Tenuta Nuova is also distinguished by the linear mineral notes that are characteristic of this single-vineyard site. In 2010, those traits are especially well-defined and pronounced. The tannins reach a level of suppleness that is almost impossible to find in the sometimes prickly and acidic Sangiovese grape. If there is one thing Giacomo Neri has mastered, it is harvesting at optimal ripeness: He knows his property and his vines better than most and it shows. Collectors will want to put this wine aside ten years or longer. Robert Parker 100 Points, Drinking 2025 – 2045+
